Description
Discover the fascinating Jewish heritage of Split on this private guided tour, exploring the city’s rich history and cultural landmarks. The tour takes you through the highlights of Diocletian’s Palace—one of the best-preserved Roman palaces in the world—as well as the historic Jewish Quarter and the Split Synagogue.Your journey begins in the impressive Palace Cellars, a remarkably preserved underground complex that reveals the architectural ingenuity of Emperor Diocletian’s 4th-century residence. From there, step into the Peristyle, the palace’s grand central courtyard surrounded by towering columns, before continuing past key landmarks such as the Cathedral of St. Domnius (once Diocletian’s Mausoleum) and the Temple of Jupiter.
Leaving the palace, you will visit the charming Fruit Square and Pjaca (People’s Square), once the administrative center during Venetian rule. The walk then leads into the historic Jewish Quarter, where Split’s Jewish community lived for centuries.
Here you’ll visit the Split Synagogue, one of the oldest continuously used synagogues in Europe, built in the 16th century within the palace walls. The tour concludes at the majestic Golden Gate, the northern entrance to the palace, where you can reflect on Split’s layered history from Roman times to the present day.
